Ruhunu is a local power located on the southern part of modern day Sri Lanka. Ruhunu borders 20px Malaya to the west, and Flag of Anuradhapura Anuradhapura to the north. Ruhunu starts off with no alliances or other diplomatic partners.

The starting Raja (ruler) of Ruhunu is randomized, with different stats each time.

Ruhunu is one of the few countries with the Pirate Heritage, which allows it to be a powerful naval nation with such bonuses as pirate fleet maintenance -10% and Naval Range +10%.

Ruhunu is a candidate for the Achievement rednaxelA, however due to the starting position, it would not be recommended to select this nation for an Achievement run.

Population and Culture Type

Ruhunu starts with a Population.png population of 31 across Local.png 6 territories. The population type breakdown is listed below:

  • 11Citizens Citizens
  • 5Freemen Freemen
  • 5Tribesmen Tribesmen
  • 10Slaves Slaves

The culture type breakdown of the Ruhunu's population is listed below:

  • 11 Hindu Tamil
  • 10 Hindu Lankan
  • 6 Buddhist Lankan
  • 4 Buddhist Tamil

Ruhunu's starting army consists of 2Unit archers.pngarchers and 2Unit light infantry.pnglight infantry. Ruhunu has 5,389 manpower Manpower.png available at the start out of a maximum 5,530, with 23 manpower gained each month from pops. Ruhunu has the option to create light infantry, archers, chariots, supply trains, and war elephants right at the start of the game.

Ruhunu also starts off with a navy of 1 Unit liburnian.pngLiburnian.

Ruhunu is a good candidate for building Unit war elephants.png war elephant armies early on due to the Indian Traditions which give options to increase elephant discipline, moral, and cost. The Indian traditions also allow for naval slave raiding, which will allow Ruhunu to easily increase it's population. This slave raiding tradition is essential if the player is considering playing tall as this nation. The Pirate Heritage also allows Ruhunu to build and maintain a strong navy with a long naval range.

The strategy will be geared towards the beginning of the campaign and conquering the island Ruhunu initially starts on to open up the player to different options, such as expanding or playing tall, depending on the endgoal of the campaign.

Before un-pausing, go into the missions tab and consult the court to get free claims on all of North and South Tambapamni and Pandiya. Import some goods, Woodwood is a good option since Ruhunu is already producing wood, a capital surplus will immediately be achieved giving a bonus of 3% more tax money. Salt Salt will decrease army maintenance, allowing for a bigger army. However, ultimately it is the player's choice. Once the trade routes are set up, select some ideas, an Omen.pngomen, and embrace some inventions.

Set the army to drill and wait for the consult the court mission to finish. Recruit some cohorts to your army as the mission is finishing. Once the mission is finished, declare war on either Malaya or Anuradhapura. The drilled army of Ruhunu should easily win any battles. Once all the territory is occupied, full annex the territory. After the war is over repeat on the remaining nation whenever an opportunity presents itself. Once the island is under Ruhunu control, there are different options that the player can follow. Ruhunu can expand north, where a war with Flag of Maurya Maurya will be inevitable or the player can stay on the island of Sri Lanka, playing tall.
