The Wars of the Diadochi

Having built the largest empire the world has ever seen, Alexander the Great died suddenly 18 years ago. With no clear successor to the empire his generals, the 'Diadochi', or Successors, have since fought over Alexander's spoils.

As the Satrap of Phrygia, our ruler Antigonos was not part of most of the great campaigns of Alexander. But in the conflicts of the last decade he has risen to be the most powerful of the successors. Recently however we have lost Persia and Babylon to Seleukos, even if we enjoy continued growing influence in Greece.

Our reputation as a protector of the free Greek cities have earned us many friends among the smaller Greek states. Otherwise we now stand alone...

The Wars of the Diadochi

Having built the largest empire the world has ever seen, Alexander the Great died suddenly 18 years ago. With no clear successor to the empire his generals, the 'Diadochi', or Successors, have since fought over Alexander's spoils.

Our ruler Kassandros of Macedon is the son of Antipatros, who was the most senior of Alexander's generals and was given the honor to guard his heirs until they came of age. Upon the death of his father Kassandros killed his appointed regent, with help from his father's enemies. He then proceeded to kill the heirs, and their mothers.

Antigonos, the former Satrap of Phrygia, is perhaps the most successful of the successors. Antigonos has also meddled with the Greek states, and control the fortress of Chalkis that was once ours. But success breeds enemies and he now stands alone, and vulnerable...

Having built the largest empire the world has ever seen, Alexander the Great died suddenly 18 years ago. With no clear successor to the empire his generals, the 'Diadochi', or Successors, have since fought over Alexander's spoils.

As a close friend of Alexander's, and an experienced general, our ruler Lysimachos would seemingly warrant a wealthier province than Thrace. Frequently getting involved in the conflicts of the Antipatrids in Macedon and Antigonos, the former Satrap of Phrygia, Lysimachos has been unable to expand his rule beyond the region he was given to guard.

Antigonos is perhaps the most successful of the successors but success breeds enemies and he now stands alone, vulnerable.

This is a great opportunity, if we can only secure allies to oppose him...

Having built the largest empire the world has ever seen, Alexander the Great died suddenly 18 years ago. With no clear successor to the empire his generals, the 'Diadochi', or Successors, have since fought over Alexander's spoils.

As one of Alexander's oldest friends, our ruler Ptolemaios has secured the wealthiest province in the empire, Egypt, for himself. Expansion into Greece and Syria has however been thwarted by Antigonos Monophtalmos, the former Satrap of Phrygia. With the entire Egyptian fleet crushed at the recent battle of Salamis.

Antigonos is perhaps the most successful of the successors but success breeds enemies and he now stands alone, vulnerable.

This is a great opportunity, if we can only secure allies to oppose him...

In this time, our ruler, Seleukos has risen through his own ability and now controls the entire Eastern Empire. This realm was recently seized from Antigonos Monophtalmos, the former Satrap of Phrygia.

The Epigoni

The kings that once served Alexander have started to pass away and with them so does the immediate claim to his Empire. The men who have become known as 'the Successors' are now themselves being succeeded by their progeny, the 'Epigoni'.

While powerful leaders in their own right, with a strong claim to the realms of their fathers, these 'Epigoni', are regional dynasts, and cannot restore an empire now was lost.

Capital of an Empire

As the successor of Alexander's Empire we must consider if [ROOT.GetCountry.GetCapital.GetName] is really the best place from which to rule the Hellenistic world. Some would argue that there are other cities that would be better suited for such a task.

Of course every possible location would come with its own benefits, so such a choice would have to be made carefully.

The Antigonid Cause Wavers

With the passing of Antigonos the state that he built out of his Phrygian satrapy stands, for the first time, without its founder. The meteoric rise of Antigonos once attracted the envy and admiration of a generation, but losses in Egypt, and Babylon proved too hard to turn around before the old general finally died.

With the passing of its first King the Phrygian realm is more disunited than it has been in a long time. Especially among the cities of Asia Minor loyalty is seemingly wavering and the entire region is now at risk of defecting from central authority. We could likely hold on to it, but this would come at the price of further alienating our remaining loyal subjects...

Coronation of Antigonos

After Demetrios smashed the Egyptian fleet at Salamis, he sent his most trusted officer, Aristodemos of Miletos with news of our great victory. Aristodemos hailed Antigonos as Basileus before the assembled crowd, and the people rejoiced. A coronation swiftly followed, and Antigonos shall now be known as Basileus to all and sundry.

News has reached the ears of Antigonos, however, that Demetrios, now crowned as co-king, has taken to mocking the other Diadochi, and giving them derogatory titles. Seleukos 'the Commander of Elephants', Ptolemaios 'the Admiral', Lysimachos 'the Treasurer', and even Agathokles 'the Governor of Sicily', though he is not one of us. When they hear of this, they will certainly not be pleased...

News Arrives from Phrygia

Our spymaster enters the throne room and gestures that they would like a word with our ruler. They bring tidings from Phrygia. The battle of Salamis was a disasterous loss for us, and most of our fleet has been sunk off the coast of Cyprus. Moreover, apparently Antigonos considers this such a feat that he has had himself crowned Basileus after his victory. Any pretence of an Argead line of succession has been officially cast aside, and the throne of Alexander's empire is ripe for the taking.

The spymaster has more news, however. It appears that Antigonos' heir Demetrios has been slandering the other Diadochi, and has been giving them unflattering titles. Seleukos 'the Commander of Elephants', Lysimachos 'the Treasurer', and even Agathokles 'the Governor of Sicily', though he is not one of us. Ptolemaios asks his spymaster what title has been bestowed upon him. The spymaster is silent for a moment, and then answers 'Admiral'. Ptolemaios' laughter rings out across the throne room.

Fourth War of the Diadochi

id

War in Greece

After the Heraklean effort that characterized the siege of Rhodes, the Antigonids turned their eyes west. The free city states of Greece were marshaled into a disciplined league, with the sole aim to pen in the ruthless Cassander and the remnants of his forces still present in Macedon.

After a brief lull in the fighting, the Phrygian generals led by Demetrios, now insist that the time is right to provoke an offensive from the Macedonian menace, irrespective of the brewing threat from Alexander's successors elsewhere.

Phrygian Sails

Our soldiers at the coast have begun reporting a great mass of Phrygian sails on the horizon. The Antigonids were bound to turn their attention to Macedon once again after the siege of Rhodes, and our generals urge us to act with haste.

The more moderate members of our council, however, suggest that a little time might be bought by conceding our last remaining holding in the Peloponnese; effectively abandoning any hope of reclaiming dominance over the so-called Hellenic League.

He claims that the Antigonid cause is not served by war with Macedon, and that all of their armies are being withdrawn from Greece.

Our generals unanimously agree that a short truce is a viable option, this will allow the Phrygians to withdraw, while leaving the rest of Greece open to be reclaimed by us. We shall watch developments with interest.

The Antigonids in their hubris and folly, have chosen to once again resume hostilities with Cassander of Macedon, in a vain attempt to prove dominance over those known as the Diadochi.

Phrygian Concessions to Egypt

The trade winds bring troubling news. The Antigonids have conceded many of their territories in Palestine and Syria to the Ptolemies; hoping, presumably, to secure a lengthy truce in which to finish off Cassander and his allies in Macedon.

The Diadochi continue to stab each other in the back with practiced skill.

A Time to Strike

The Antigonids in Phrygia are embroiled in conflict in the west. This is perhaps the opportunity we have been looking for to finally end their pitiful dynasty. Our advisors recommend that we strike now, and invade Syria with all the might we can muster.

On the other hand we also have trouble closer to home, perhaps an ultimatum is enough to secure access to the Mediterrenean sea. Further conquests can be planned for a later time.

A Messenger from the Seleukid Empire

Our conflict in the west has not gone without notice in the Seleukid Empire. A messenger arrived today proclaiming that the Seleucids are ready to support those who would oppose our claim to Alexander's Empire and once more go to war in the East.

The envoy also brings an offer however: If we concede our hold on Syria they agree to stand down for now and let us settle our differences with the other Diadochi without their direct involvement.

The envoy is quite clear on the fact that this means giving up our great capital; Antigoneia. It is not clear if the Seleukids expect us to consider this as anything but an insult.

Phrygian Concessions to the Seleukids

The Antigonids in Phrygia have conceded many of their territories in Syria and Mesopotamia to the Seleukid Empire; hoping, presumably, to stave off conflict in the east while they fight their war in the west.

It seems Seleukos has once more stabbed a friend in the back.

Freedom?

Our overlord has moved away from this region and surrendered their strongholds to an opposing Diadochi faction. An emissary arrived today from the court of the Antigonids in Phrygia, almost as if an afterthought in this general hasty retreat, to let us know that we will no longer enjoy any protection or be expected to pay any form of tribute.

Protector of the Greeks?

The withdrawal of the Antigonids in Phrygia from Greece and them failing to live up to their claims of protecting the Free Greek cities against the other Diadochi, an increasing number within our own government are asking that we reconsider our own support for the Phrygian cause.

Some argue that Phrygia has shown itself to be weak and that we would be better off seeking our own fortune as an independent entity. As free Greeks we should have the right to steer our own destiny.
