Culture

Culture is a representation of the ethnicity and customs of a state, character, or pop.

Nation and character culture

A nation's Primary Culture affects its diplomatic relations. Nations of a different culture within the same group have a -10 Opinion penalty with each other, while those of a different culture group have a -20 penalty. A nation's culture also determines its Military Traditions. A nation's primary culture can only be changed by forming a new nation or through specific events.

Characters' culture determines their names and initial physical appearance (the latter can change through interbreeding). Character culture can never be changed, but newborn children will often take the nation's primary culture, regardless of the culture of their parents.

Pop culture and assimilation

Pop culture determines how they are affected by various HappinessHappiness modifiers, based on whether the pop is of the nation's Primary Culture, a different culture within the same group ("Wrong Culture"), or from a different culture group altogether ("Wrong Culture-Group").

Graphical culture

The graphical culture of a culture group determines the style of unit and city models. Every graphical culture has its own unit models, used by all the nations of the associated culture groups which don't have unique unit models. City models are shared among several graphical cultures, and their style depends on the original (starting) majority culture of the city's territory.
