Bactria is a Local Power controlling much of Bactriana and Sogdiana as a satrapy of the Seleukid Empire, one of the Hellenistic states in the east arising from the collapse of the Argead Empire. With 99 territories and 1016 pops, it is strongest of the three eastern satrapies of the Seleukid Empire and one of the most powerful states in the region despite its subject status and largely Bactrian and Sogdian populace, able to project its power in the region much more effectively than the neighbouring Seleukid and Mauryan Empires despite their nominally larger size. Historically, the satraps of Bactria would declare independence to form the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom and conquer large parts of Ariana and northern India as the Indo-Greeks to form a kingdom famed for its sophistication and cultural syncretism between east and west, before fracturing and falling to the invasions of the Sakas and Yuezhi, though its cultural and religious legacy would persist for many more centuries.
- Main article: Bactrian events
Bactria has a few unique events centering around the interaction of the Hellenic colonists and the Bactrian natives, including a special event that can trigger at the beginning of the game that allows Bactria to switch from Macedonian to Bactrian culture. Additionally, there are a couple of events by which Diodotus, historical founder of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, can appear and become the ruler. The Bactrian events also include the DHE covering the unification of the eastern Scythian tribes and the rise of the Dahae just to the west.
As one of the easternmost Hellenistic states, Bactria can take the decision to move their centre of power to Northern India and embrace greater cultural syncretism if they make conquests in the region, representing the historical creation of the Indo-Greek kingdoms.
An Indo-Greek Kingdom
The lure of friends, empires, and riches to the East leads many of our people to the realization that fighting over the scraps of Alexander's Empire, may not be a goal worth pursuing. Greater glory lies in tying our destiny to the land beyond the Indus.
As well, as a Hellenistic culture group monarchy, Bactria also has access to the decision to form the Argead Empire.
Reunite Alexander's Empire
That one power could not possibly come from any dynasty but our own. Only a family that respects the Argead traditions can legitimately claim its legacy.
Combined with Bactria's Hellenistic heritage (which gives +10% Wrong Culture-Group Happiness as one of its modifiers), if Bactria manages to take both of these decisions it can accumulate one of the highest wrong culture-group happiness modifiers in the game, making dealing with foreign conquest and aggressive expansion much easier.
Bactria has 1,016 Population at the beginning of the game. Culturally, the population is mostly of the Bactrian culture group with a significant Macedonian minority concentrated in the province of Oxiana and the cities of Alexandreia Margiana and Alexandreia Eschate. The country is religiously divided more evenly, with Zoroastrianism dominant in Bactriana (with a significant Hellenic minority) while Sogdiana has some Ritualistic and Heptadic minorities in the outlying areas. This large proportion of wrong culture group and wrong religion pops means that many of their pops are generally unhappy, even if its Hellenistic Heritage provides some buffer, and makes Bactria vulnerable to high aggressive expansion in the early game until they can be assimilated (unless the event option to switch to Bactrian culture is taken). The largest population groups are:
- 277 Zoroastrian Bactrian
- 192 Hellenic Macedonian
- 153 Zoroastrian Sogdian
- 116 Heptadian Sogdian
- 83 Hellenic Bactrian
Bactria's population types show a roughly even split between the four types:
- 241 Citizen (23.72%)
- 290 Freeman (28.54%)
- 272 Tribesman (26.77%)
- 213 Slave (20.96%)
Bactria is notable for being the only nation from the Hellenistic culture group to have Persian Military Traditions.
Bactria begins with a single army of 9 Cohorts consisting of 3 Horse Archers, 3 Light Infantry, and 3 Heavy Cavalry. Its maximum Manpower for Bactria at 450 AUC is 35,069, with 162 Manpower gained each month from pops. All strategic trade goods except for elephants are produced in at least one Bactrian province, giving them access to all standard unit types except for war elephants. The presence of in particular when combined with its Persian Military Traditions means that Bactria can field strong, effective armies that can pick off isolated Seleukid or Mauryan armies if used properly.
Bactria has no coast and no ships.
