Syracusae is a local power in eastern Sicily, a former Corinthian colony that has grown to be one of the largest and most important Greek cities and one of the main powers of Magna Graecia and beyond, with interests stretching as far as Greece and the Adriatic Sea. Long engaged in a struggle with
Carthage for control of the cities of Sicily, in 450 AUC Syracusae under its tyrant Agathokles had just been defeated after an ambitious campaign in Africa, leaving the island largely divided between the
Carthaginian domains in the west and Syracusan territory in the east, including its feudatories of
Gelas to the south and
Rhegium and
Locri on the mainland. As still by far the most powerful Greek state in the area Syracusae is in a good position to unite the smaller Greek states by diplomacy or war, but tensions with
Carthage is likely inevitable and Syracusae will have to find other allies and prepare for war to the west all the while keeping a wary eye on the rising power of
Rome, whose ambitions will likely soon reach the Greek cities of Magna Graecia. Historically Syracusae would call in
Epirus to break the Carthaginian dominance during the Pyrrhic Wars, allying with
Rome after the wars' conclusion and enjoying a lasting period of peace and prosperity as a center of art and philosophy - most notably in the person of Archimedes - until siding with
Carthage during the Second Punic War and being annexed by
Rome after its defeat in 212 BC, though Syracusae would continue to prosper as the most important city in Sicily for centuries afterwards.
Missions[edit | edit source]
- Main article: Syracusan missions
With the Magna Graecia DLC, Syracusae has a unique set of 4 missions focused on uniting the remaining Siceliote states and developing the area, driving the
Carthaginians from Sicily once and for all, conquering the Italiote city states of Magna Graecia, and overthrowing the tyrants to restore the old republic.
Like most other Hellenistic group countries, Syracusae can also get access to two of the Greek cultural missions under certain circumstances. If Syracusae conquers territory in Greece it can get the Greek cultural mission tree Pan-Hellenic Government and attempt to unite the Greek city-states into a new Hellenic League, while making conquests in the Asian, Bithynian, or Thracian region will gives access to the Euxine Sea Hellenistic cultural mission tree The Hospitable Sea, directing Syracusae to expand its influence and dominate the Euxine Sea region.
Like all other countries, Syracusae also has access to the Generic missions regardless of whether or not the DLC is enabled.
Events[edit | edit source]
Apart from those associated with its unique missions, Syracusae also has a few country-specific flavour events.
Syracusan flavor events[edit | edit source]
Syracusae has a couple of flavor events around the famous mathematician and inventor Archimedes, who spawns the court of the owner of the city of Syrakousai in 490 (note that this does not necessarily have to be Syracusae itself), as well as the legacy of the conquests of Dionysius I.[1]

Agathokles events[edit | edit source]
Syracusae also has a startup event revolving around Agathokles' claim to be King of Sicily, allowing Syracusae to choose between improving relations with its neighbours and getting claims on the rest of the island.[2]

Mamertine Republic events[edit | edit source]

When Agathokles dies, there is also a special event that can trigger if Syracusae holds Messana that spawns the 20px Mamertine Republic, giving Syracusae the choice of either immediately declaring war to reconquer the city or accepting their control and allowing them to rule the city as an autonomous mercenary state.
Decisions[edit | edit source]
As a Siceliote-cultured country in the region of Magna Graecia, Syracusae has access to the decisions to form Sicily and later
Magna Graecia.
Unite Sicily
The goal of uniting the island of Sicily, whilst seemingly a simple thing, has been the cause of countless lost lives. Perhaps we could be the ones to finally succeed in this task?

Form Magna Graecia
The Greeks have been present in southern Italy and Sicily for many centuries. Whilst often far removed from the macro-politics of the mainland, the region of Magna Graecia, as it was known, played an important part in the Hellenistic world.

Syracusan Tyranny[edit | edit source]
- Main article: Death to Tyrants
If the Magna Graecia DLC is enabled, the 20px Syracusan Tyranny can be created as a
civil war releasable that appears as part of the final tasks of the unique Syracusan mission tree Death to Tyrants if the civil war path is chosen, representing the resistance of the existing monarchical government fighting against the pro-republican rebellion. The Syracusan Tyranny will usually retain control over the old capital when the civil war starts, and once defeated will allow Syracusae to finish its transition back into an Oligarchic Republic.

Diplomacy[edit | edit source]
Syracusae starts with 3 feudatories:
Population[edit | edit source]
Syracusae begins with a population of 135 pops divided across its
11 territories. Most of the population is Siceliote, though there are some Boeotian pops in the northern cities and a few Achaeans in the south, and some of the inland territories are still largely of the native Siculian culture and may be the source of some trouble. All of Syracusae's pops are Hellenic.
Mercenary states[edit | edit source]
- Main article: Mercenary state
![]() |
Available only with the Magna Graecia DLC enabled. |
A mercenary state is a particular type of client state that has been created by granting control of a city to a mercenary company, much like the historical 20px Mamertine Republic. As well as fighting alongside their overlord, each mercenary state will also reduce the overlord's costs when hiring other mercenary companies, and if the overlord is a monarchy with the
Mercenary Contract Law enacted, the overlord can use the Elect New Leader Character Interaction to replace their current leader with that of the mercenary state at the cost of some
stability, much like Agathokles himself once did.
Mercenary states can generally only be created by releasing an owned city through the

50 political power, available from the start of the game to
Syracusae (representing the rich mercenary-using traditions of the Siceliotes) or to any country that has adopted the

Oratory invention. The 20px Mamertine Republic, when released, will also be a mercenary state.
