The reliquary interface

Treasure chest.png Sacred treasures are artifacts of particular cultural, religious, or historical importance that can be placed in Holy Site.png holy sites to provide a small bonus to every territory in the province. Each treasure is unique - there are only a finite number of possible treasures in the game, with most being placed at certain locations at the start of the game and a few created through special missions, decisions, or events - but treasures can be collected and taken from other countries by desecrating their holy sites or seizing their reliquaries in order to relocate them your own cities and altars.

Altars[edit | edit source]

Each Holy Site.png holy site has a certain number of altars, depending on the rank of its territory: one for Territory settlement.png settlements, two for Territory city.png cities, and three for Territory metropolis.png metropolises. Each altar is a slot where a treasure can be potentially placed, which will allow the treasure to be confer its bonuses to the entire province (not just the territory its holy site is in); it is therefore useful to build many holy sites and bring as many sacred treasures as possible to the capital province in order to maximize the effects of their bonuses. Any treasures located in a holy site will be highlight in the holy site's banner in the Religion & Holy Site mapmode, and additionally appear near the top right of the territory panel; all owned holy sites and their treasures, as well as those of deities in the pantheon (even if unowned), can also be viewed in the religion screen.

A treasure can only be placed in an altar if its holy site's deity is in the country's current Change pantheon cost modifier.png pantheon, though treasures that have already been placed will continue to give their bonuses to its province. There are no restrictions on where a treasure can be placed or when it will give its bonuses; any treasure can be placed in any holy site regardless of its religion or the state religion of the country that owns it. Treasures can be removed from owned altars and deposited back into the reliquary at a cost of Aggressive expansion.png +1.00 Aggressive Expansion, which leaves the holy site intact and the altar slot free for another treasure to be placed.

Treasures will also be removed from an altar and deposited in the reliquary if its holy site is destroyed through Desecrate holy site desecration. Desecration can be done through the Religion menu if the holy site is owned or by using the Desecrate holy site Desecrate Holy Sites army interaction on an army located in the holy site's territory, at a cost of Aggressive expansion.png 2 aggressive expansion, and the treasures will be taken by the country that is desecrating the holy site. Importantly, the Desecration army action can be used on any controlled territory, even occupied territories that belong to other countries, which has the effect of seizing treasures that are currently held in other countries' holy sites. Just as this makes it lucrative to target the holy sites of other countries, this also makes it even more important for countries to defend their core areas where most of their treasures are likely to be held.

Reliquary[edit | edit source]

Unplaced sacred treasures are held in the nation's National treasure.png reliquary and confer no benefits, but cannot be taken through desecration. Treasures in the reliquary will be listed as being in the country generally rather than in any specific territory can be placed in owned Holy Site.png holy sites of any deity in the Change pantheon cost modifier.png pantheon, as long as there are altar slots remaining.

Treasures in another country's reliquary can only be taken by annexation, unless its owner decides to take it out of the reliquary and place it in a Holy Site.png holy site. If a country is annexed by conquest, the conqueror will seize most of the treasures in the reliquary, although if the annexed country has more than 2 treasures in the reliquary some will be spirited away to another country in Diplomatic range.png diplomatic range (if the reliquary has 3 treasures, 1 will escape; if there are 4 or more, 2 will escape, with all the rest taken by the conqueror). Note that treasures in Holy Site.png holy sites do not count towards the number of treasures in the reliquary, and will always be transferred along with their territories. Diplomatic annexation will instead transfer all reliquary treasures to the overlord, regardless of how many treasures there are in the reliquary, and is a more reliable (if slower) way to take another country's reliquary.

Clicking on the reliquary icon in the religion screen will show a list of all the treasures owned by the country, including both those placed in all holy sites as well as those stored in the reliquary (identifiable as currently generically in the country as opposed to a specific territory).

List of treasures[edit | edit source]

Treasures are listed by the religion they are associated with, usually the deity of their holy site if placed in one or the state religion of the country that holds them in its reliquary. Note that this should not be taken as an indication that a treasure is tied to any given religion; any treasure can be installed in a holy site of any deity or religion and will always confer its bonus regardless of the state religion of the holy site's owner. Some treasures will also only appear if a certain DLC is enabled.
