The 20px Mamertine Republic is a releasable nation in southern Europe, representing the historical republic that was founded in the Greek town of Messana by unemployed Italic mercenaries after the death of the Flag of Syracusae Syracusan king Agathokles and the end of his wars in 289 BC and named after their patron god Mamers, the Sabellian Mars. Historically they became a significant force in the region, raiding and pirating the nearby settlements and eventually coming into a conflict with Flag of Syracusae Syracusae that would escalate into the First Punic War between Flag of Rome Rome and Flag of Carthage Carthage by 264 BC, after which the Mamertine Republic would be subsumed into the greater Flag of Rome Roman state.

Ingame, the Mamertine Republic can be released from Flag of Syracusae Syracusae by event after the death of its starting ruler, Agathokles, reflecting the historical circumstances of its founding. A slightly different variation of the country, the 20px Marsades Republic, can also be released as one of the outcomes of the unique Flag of Syracusae Syracusan mission tree Death to Tyrants.

The Mamertine Republic will revolt in Messana (80) on the death of Agathokles, as long as the city is still owned and the monarchy has not been overthrown (i.e. through the unique Flag of Syracusae Syracusae Syracusan mission tree Death to Tyrants). Flag of Syracusae Syracusae will then have a choice between accepting the takeover and allowing the Mamertine Republic to rule Messana as an unruly Vassalized.png mercenary state, or immediately declare war to try to reclaim the city.

Mamertine Uprising

The Mamertines, a group of Latin mercenaries that were stalwart supporters of Agathocles, have left our land and captured Messana. Brutally putting an end to a large part of the population, they have succeeded them as rulers of the strait between Sicily and the rest of Magna Graecia.

As a form of compensation, the Mamertines have offered us a measly sum of gold every now and then as tribute.

Mission tree[edit | edit source]

Main article: Death to Tyrants

In the unique Flag of Syracusae Syracusan mission tree Death to Tyrants, the 20px Marsades Republic can be released from one of Syracusae's cities as payment to mercenaries in return for their support in a coup against the government. Unlike with the normal Mamertine Republic, the Marsades Republic is not necessarily released from Messana and will have Bruttian rather than Sabellian primary culture, and is always released as an independent country.
