Emporion is a local power in Tarraconensis, situated along the border between Iberia and Gaul. Founded in 575 BC as part of the Phocaean colonization of the Western Mediterranean, the city has become an important center on the coastal route to Iberia and one of the more important Hellenic centers in the region, maintaining its independence from both the major power of Carthage and Emporion's larger sister city of Massilia to the east. Historically, Emporion would ally itself with Rome by time of the Punic Wars, serving as a base for their conquest of Iberia and eventually integrated into their empire under which the city slowly declined in favour of the nearby cities of Tarraco and Barcino.
