Delian League
The Delian League is a special formable nation for
Athens, representing a restoration of the thalassocratic league it led and dominated that at its height included most of the cities of the Aegean and Propontic Seas from
Rhodes to
Byzantion and the cities of Chalkidiki as well as more distant allies as far as
Korkyra and Cephalonia. Originally founded in 478 BC to continue the Greco-Persian Wars after the defeat of Xerxes I's invasion to liberate the Ionian cities from
Achaemenid rule, Athens's increasing control and dominance over its member states made it a great naval power and the most powerful city in Greece, ending with the defeat and dismantlement of the Delian League at the hands of the rival
Peloponnesian League of
Sparta at the end of the Peloponnesian Wars in 404 BC.
A resurgent Athens can reform the league through either decision or one of its unique mission trees, depending on whether the
Magna Graecia DLC is enabled, if it has managed to regain control over the key cities across the Aegean Sea and beyond that once made up the league, most of which begin the game subject to the Diadochi Kingdoms of
Thrace, and
Macedon, and especially the
Antigonid Kingdom. Successfully restoring the Delian League will be a difficult feat considering
Athens's own position as a an
Antigonid subject and beyond that will likely involve more contention with much larger and nominally stronger powers, but would be a powerful demonstration of the return of Athenian power.
Formation Decision[edit | edit source]
The main formation decision is available if the Magna Graecia DLC is not enabled, and requires controlling or vassalizing all the major cities that were once part of the league, including most of the main Aegean and Propontic cities as well as the Ionian islands of western Greece. Forming the Delian League by decision will give bonuses to
citizen happiness and
naval maintenance, reflecting the naval and democratic traditions of
Athens and its league.
Delian League
The Delian League was formed by Athens and their allies to defend themselves from the encroaching Persians to the east after Xerxes tried to invade our cities. In these tumultuous times it is only natural for all the Ionian cities to seek shelter in an alliance with one another once again. It is time for us to rebuild the Delian League.

Mission Tree Formation[edit | edit source]
- Main article: Restoring the Delian League
If the Magna Graecia DLC is enabled, the Delian League is instead formed as a reward for completing the Restoring the Delian League
Athenian unique national mission, one of the final mission trees available after regaining independence and securing control over Attica. While forming the Delian League this way does require progressing through a number of political and economic tasks as well as making conquests, the mission tree formation only requires gaining control over the most important cities of the league and has considerably fewer territorial requirements than the decision, though it will still likely require coming into conflict with the Diadochi in the region.
Unlike formation by decision, forming the Delian League this way will give permanent military and subject-related bonuses, reflecting the imperial nature of the league, and unlike most country formations does not give any modifiers to the capital (largely covered in earlier mission trees and tasks).

Restoring the Delian League
After we have worked tirelessly to gather together our ancient allies and subjects for many years, we have finally managed to secure enough political clout to officially restore the Delian League. It is time for us to look beyond the borders of the original league, as we no longer need to be limited by the ambitions of the past.
