Cyrenaica is a regional power in North Africa, a federation of Greek colonies centered on the eponymous city of Cyrene and known as an important cultural and intellectual center of the Hellenistic world. Always associated with the neighbouring power of Egypt as first an independent kingdom and then a satrapy of the Achaemenid and Argead empires, Cyrenaica came under the control of Egypt after the death of Alexander but by 450 AUC had essentially slipped out of Ptolemaic control as an independent nation. Settled on a fertile coast surrounded by desert on land but with easy access to the Mediterranean, Cyrenaica is in an ideal location to either grow rich off trade and go for more cultural and intellectual pursuits or found a maritime empire in the Eastern Mediterranean to rival that of Carthage - but only if it can manage to deal with Egypt, larger, stronger, and eager to reassert its authority over what it sees as its natural sphere of influence, as well as the nomads of the desert that seem present an ever-present threat to civilization.
Historically Cyrenaica would again come under the control of Egypt under Ptolemy's stepson Magas shortly after the beginning of the game, alternating between short periods of independence and direct Ptolemaic rule before its last independent king bequeathed the kingdom to Rome on his death in 96 BC, after which Cyrenaica became a Roman province.
- Main article: Greek missions
At the beginning of the game, Cyrenaica starts off only with access to the generic missions. However, like most other Hellenistic group countries, Cyrenaica can also get access to two of the Greek cultural missions under certain circumstances. If Cyrenaica conquers territory in Greece, it can get the Greek cultural mission tree Pan-Hellenic Government and attempt to unite the Greek city-states into a new Hellenic League, while making conquests in the Asian, Bithynian, or Thracian region will gives access to the Euxine Sea Hellenistic cultural mission tree The Hospitable Sea, directing Cyrenaica to expand its influence and dominate the Euxine Sea region.

The Cyrenaican Problem
Near the beginning of the game Egypt will decide how to deal with Cyrenaica, who only a few years before had effectively asserted their independence after the death of the previous Ptolemaic governor. Egypt might choose to attempt to bribe the new king and try to get Cyrenaica as a tributary, assert its historic rights and get claims on the area, or send the king's stepson Magas to restore Ptolemaic rule over the region - forcing the Cyrenaicans to decide whether to accept their new governor and become a tributary of Egypt, or face a civil war against Magas's forces and the Cyrenaican Opposition.
As a Hellenistic culture group monarchy, Cyrenaica has access to the decision to form the Argead Empire.
Reunite Alexander's Empire
That one power could not possibly come from any dynasty but our own. Only a family that respects the Argead traditions can legitimately claim its legacy.
The Cyrenaican Opposition is a civil war releasable that can appear as part of the The Cyrenaican Problem event chain if Egypt decides to send Magas to reassert control. If Cyrenaica refuses Magas's ultimatum, Magas will seize control over Paliouros (3366) and several other eastern territories on the Egyptian border as the Cyrenaican Opposition and begin a civil war against the existing Cyrenaican government, which Egypt might decide to help fund with additional troops. If Magas wins, the Cyrenaican Opposition will become Cyrenaica and Egypt can either accept them as a tributary or demand more control - which Cyrenaica might accept to become a client state, or refuse to remain independent, which will grant Egypt claims.
Cyrenaica has a population of 197 at the beginning of the game, divided across its 226 territories. The coast and the bulk of the population are Cyrenaican Hellenic, while the more sparsely populated interior is populated by native Libyan Megalithic pops.
