Culture

Culture is a representation of the ethnicity and customs of a state, character, or pop.

Nation and character cultureEdit

A nation's Primary Culture affects its diplomatic relations. Nations of a different culture within the same group have a -10 Opinion penalty with each other, while those of a different culture group have a -20 penalty. A nation's culture also determines its Military Traditions and unit graphics (unless the nation has unique unit graphics). A nation's primary culture can only be changed by forming a new nation or through specific events.

Characters' culture determines their names and initial physical appearance (the latter can change through interbreeding). Character culture can never be changed, but newborn children will often take the nation's primary culture, regardless of the culture of their parents.

Pop culture and assimilationEdit

Pop culture determines how they are affected by various  Happiness modifiers, based on whether the pop is of the nation's Primary Culture, a different culture within the same group ("Wrong Culture"), or from a different culture group altogether ("Wrong Culture-Group").

AssimilationEdit

A pop's culture can be changed to the nation's primary culture via assimilation. Assimilating individual pops can be performed in the city menu and the macro-builder, and costs 20 Oratory Power per pop. Alternatively, the Cultural Assimilation governor policy provides a monthly chance of assimilating a pop in the affected province, which is 5.0% + 2.5% per point of the governor's  Finesse. Governors always assimilate pops to the nation's primary culture, regardless of the governor's own culture. Certain events (notably the conquest of populous cities as Rome) may also result in pop assimilation.
